What is Upward Bound?
The
Higher Education Consortium Upward Bound Program (UB)
is a college preparatory academy which provides high school students the opportunity
to acquire the academic skills and personal motivation necessary to finish high
school, enter and earn a degree from a college or university. We also provide support to parents to
assist them in helping their student(s). In addition to the academic
guidance and assistance provided by our central staff and faculty, participants receive support from the HEC
Upward Bound social worker.
Participant Eligibility Criteria
HEC Upward Bound is a federally funded
educational program. All of the services provided by HEC Upward
Bound are FREE. The Federal
Government sets the guidelines for eligibility.
To be eligible for Upward Bound, a student must meet U.S. Department of
Education taxable income guidelines. Additionally, HEC Upward Bound students
must meet the following requirements:

Be first generation college bound
(neither parent living in home has four year degree)

Display potential to succeed at the
postsecondary level
|

ü
Be taking a college prep curriculum
|
ü
Attend a SLPS target school or live in
the surrounding area
|

ü
Have a 2.0 G.P.A. in high school
|
ü
Participate in all services and
activities
|
Program Services
The Academic
Component begins in September and ends in May. Students take classes that
will provide additional academic support and development on two Saturdays of
each month. HEC Upward Bound
students receive tutoring, ACT/SAT preparation, personal and career guidance,
assistance with financial aid and the college admissions process.
The Summer
Component is a six-week educational program. Students attend academic classes Monday
through Friday and participate in fine arts, recreational, and cultural
activities. The summer concludes each year with a college tour where students
travel to selected cities to get information, tour campuses, interact with
college students and gain a better understanding about college.
